Qin Jiao and Can Sha expel Wind-Damp.
Yi Yi Ren expels Dampness.
Ban Xia was added to resolve Phlegm (in the form of joint deformities).
Sang Ji Sheng was added to nourish Liver-Blood and simultaneously
expel Wind-Damp.
This patient made a gradual improvement and she is still under
treatment at the time of writing.
Hip
Pain in the hip is usually due to invasion of Cold and Dampness. From a Western medical
view-point it may be due to osteoarthritis. In the beginning stages, this can be successfully cured,
whilst in the late stages acupuncture cannot effect a cure. The pain is usually unilateral.
Treatment
Pain in the hip seldom occurs as an acute episode. It usually develops very gradually over the
years.
The main distal points to use are:
- G.B.-41 Zulinqi is the main distal point. It affects the hip and it expels Dampness. It is
the Stream point of the Gall-Bladder channel and, as such it expels pathogenic factors
from the channel. It is also the opening point of the Girdle Vessel which flows over the
hip. - G.B.-40 Qiuxu is the Source point of the Gall-Bladder channel which is always involved
in hip pain. - BL-62 Shenmai is the opening point of the Yang Heel Vessel which also flows over the
hip. The Yang Heel Vessel promotes agility and movement and this point is especially
useful if the hip is very stiff. - SP-3 Taibai can also be used as a distal point as the Spleen channel affects the inner
aspect of the hip. It is especially useful if the hip pain radiates to the groin.
