Acupuncture The main acupuncture points used were:
SP-9 Yinlingquan, SP-6 Sanyinjiao and BL-22 Sanjiaoshu with even
method to drain Dampness.
L.I.-4 Hegu, ST-8 Touwei and Du-20 Baihui with even method to expel
Dampness from the head.
Herbal treatment The herbal prescription used was a variation of Huo Po Xia Ling Tang
Agastache-Magnolia-Pinellia-Poria Decoction.

Bai Dou Kou Fructus Amomi cardamomi 2 g
Hou Po Cortex Magnoliae officinalis 3 g
Fu Ling Sclerotium Poriae cocos 9 g
Zhu Ling Sclerotium Polypori umbellati 4.5 g
Yi Yi Ren Semen Coicis lachryma jobi 6 g
Ze Xie Rhizoma Alismatis orientalis 4.5 g
Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae ternatae 4.5 g
Xing Ren Semen Pruni armeniacae 9 g
Bai Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis macrocephalae 5 g
Cang Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis lanceae 4 g
This variation of the prescription adds Bai Zhu to tonify the Spleen and
Cang Zhu to fragrantly resolve Dampness, and eliminates Dan Dou Chi
as there is no Heat.
This prescription was used for three courses and was then followed by
two courses of Liu Jun Zi Tang Six Gentlemen Decoction to tonify the
Spleen.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: Damp-Heat-Male, Age 31
A 31-year-old man had suffered from ME ever since he caught a viral infection 2 years
previously. He had had another viral infection 2 months before he came for treatment, from
which he had not recovered and experienced severe muscle fatigue and ache. His limbs felt
heavy and his concentration was poor. He felt exhausted all the time and often dizzy. His stools
were loose and his glands swollen. He often felt hot and thirsty and had a pain under the right
rib-cage. He also had a constant feeling of fullness in the epigastric area. On interrogation, it
transpired that he had also had a herpes-zoster infection 1 year before the viral infection which
triggered off the ME.
His tongue was Red and had a thick-sticky-yellow coating which was clearly much thicker on
