Defensive-Qi portion by Wind-Heat. The position of red points on the

front and sides of the tongue clearly shows the location of the

pathogenic factor on the Exterior.

Treatment principle The principle of treatment adopted was to expel Wind-Heat, release the
Exterior, restore the descending of Lung-Qi and resolve Fire-Poison.
This boy was treated with herbs only which, with some patience and
imagination from his mother, he was able to drink.

Herbal treatment The formula used was a variation of Yin Qiao San Lonicera-Forsythia
Powder and the dosages used were not much lower than those used for
an adult. The reason for this approach is that children will rarely finish
each dose of a decoction and therefore the dose a child takes is
accordingly a reduced one.

Explanation The first 9 herbs constitute the Yin Qiao San which releases the
Exterior, expels Wind-Heat and resolves Fire-Poison.

Kuan Dong Hua restores the descending of Lung-Qi and stops cough.

Huang Qin clears interior Heat. This herb was added first of all to

enhance the clearing-Heat effect of the prescription and secondly

because Wind-Heat has the tendency to turn into interior Heat fairly

rapidly, especially in children. I therefore often add this herb which

clears interior Heat, to expelling Wind-Heat prescriptions, especially in

children.

Da Qing Ye was added to resolve Fire-Poison from the throat. From a

Western point of view, it has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

This formula cleared up the problem in 2 days.
