Explanation
This is one of the three Conducting Qi Decoctions for Stomach-Fire at the Qi level with
constipation but without much abdominal pain or fullness.
- Da Huang drains Stomach-Fire by purging.
- Mang Xiao helps Da Huang to purge.
- Zhi Gan Cao harmonizes and tempers the purging action of Da Huang.
Variations
- If there are signs of injury of Yin add Sheng Di Huang Radix Rehmanniae glutinosae and
Mai Men Dong Tuber Ophiopogonis japonici. - If there is abdominal pain and fullness use Da Cheng Qi Tang Great Conducting Qi
Decoction instead of the above formula. Da Cheng Qi Tang contains Da Huang, Mang
Xiao, Hou Po Cortex Magnoliae officinalis and Zhi Shi Fructus Citri aurantii immaturus.
