In complicated cases of a deficiency of both Yin and Yang of the Kidneys, this remedy, taken at
night, can be used in conjunction with the Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan Golden Chest Kidney-Qi Pill
which should be taken in the morning. The dosage of these two pills should be adjusted
according to whether the deficiency of Kidney-Yin or Kidney-Yang is primary.
The tongue presentation appropriate to this remedy is a Red body without coating.

Explanation
This remedy nourishes Kidney-Yin and clears Empty-Heat. It is particularly indicated when the
symptoms of Empty-Heat are pronounced: these would include malar flush, a feeling of heat in
the evening, hot flushes and a Red tongue without coating.

Tiredness: Kidney-Yin Deficiency-Female, Age 58
A 58-year-old woman complained of feeling very exhausted for the past 14 years. She had had a
hysterectomy 15 years previously because her periods were very heavy and her uterus was
prolapsed. Prior to that, she had had 4 miscarriages before having a child. After childbirth she
suffered from post-natal depression manifesting with fits of crying and being deeply depressed.
She felt emotionally worse after the hysterectomy. She also felt depressed, sweated at night, felt
generally hot and suffered from dizziness and tinnitus. Her lower back ached most of the time.
She had suffered from joint pain (hands, wrists and shoulders) for the past 16 years.
Her pulse was generally Weak and very Deep and Weak on both Rear positions (Kidneys). Her
tongue was slightly Red while the sides were Pale. The coating had no root and the back of the
tongue had no spirit.
Diagnosis This case shows a deficiency of both Blood and Kidneys. In women, a
deficiency of Blood very often overlaps with a deficiency of the
Kidneys. This is due to the relationship between Blood and Uterus on
the one hand and Kidney and Uterus on the other. In other words, the
uterus is the common link in women between Blood and Kidney energy.
