Explanation
This formula treats pain in the chest from Cold. Note that the above dosages are for a pill, not a
decoction. This formula is usually taken as a patent remedy. One particular way of using this
formula is a plaster applied to the umbilicus. In the absence of a plaster the herbs of the above
formula can be boiled and strained and the resulting liquid applied to the umbilicus as a hot
compress. The umbilicus is on the Directing vessel and is also related to the Penetrating vessel
and the Kidney's Original Qi. For these reasons, this method is applicable to treat Chest Painful
Obstruction from Kidney deficiency.

Explanation
This formula eliminates Cold, opens the chest, moves Blood, resolves Phlegm and opens the
orifices. It differs from the previous one in so far as it is hotter in nature and is therefore
indicated for pronounced symptoms of Cold. This formula also exists as a patent remedy, the
form in which it is normally used.
