Pulse: Slippery, Rapid, Overflowing.


All the above symptoms and signs are due to Phlegm. A feeling of oppression in the chest is
typical of Phlegm. The mouth feels dry because of the Fire, but there is no desire to drink
because of the Phlegm. Since the Stomach is functionally related to the Large Intestine (Bright
Yang), there may be mucus in the stools. Nausea or vomiting are due to Phlegm impairing the
descending of Stomach-Qi. The tongue-crack illustrated above is typical of Stomach
Phlegm-Fire and it almost invariably indicates that the Mind is affected by Phlegm-Fire resulting
in manic-depression.


Treatment Principle


Harmonize the Stomach, clear Fire, resolve Phlegm, calm the Mind.

General Prescription


ST-21 Liangmen, Ren-12 Zhongwan, Ren-13 Shangwan, P-5 Jianshi, ST-40 Fenglong, P-7
Daling, Du-24 Shenting, G.B.-13 Benshen, ST-44 Neiting. All with reducing method, except for
Ren-12 which should be reinforced.


Explanation



  • ST-21 is used for Stomach Excess patterns.

  • Ren-12 tonifies Stomach and Spleen to resolve Phlegm.

  • Ren-13 subdues rebellious Stomach-Qi and is used if there is nausea or vomiting.

  • P-5 resolves Phlegm from the Stomach and the Mind.

  • ST-40 resolves Phlegm.

  • P-7 resolves Phlegm and calms the Mind.

  • Du-24 and G.B.-13 calm the Mind.

  • ST-44 clears Stomach-Fire.
