Epigastric Pain: Stomach and Spleen Deficient and Cold-Female, Age 47
A 47-year-old woman had been suffering from epigastric pain for a few months. The pain was
dull and improved with pressure and application of a hotwater bottle. Her appetite was poor and
she felt easily tired. She easily felt cold. Her tongue was very Pale, slightly Swollen and with
transversal cracks on one side (Plate 14.2(378)). Her pulse was Weak and Deep.
Diagnosis This is a clear condition of Spleen and Stomach deficiency with internal
Cold. The transversal cracks on the side of the tongue indicate very
long-standing Spleen deficiency.
Treatment principle The treatment principle adopted was to strengthen Stomach and Spleen
and warm the Centre.
Herbal treatment She was treated only with herbs and the decoction used was a variation
of Huang Qi Jian Zhong Tang Astragalus Strengthening the Centre
Decoction:
Huang Qi Radix Astragali membranacei 9 g
Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae albae 18 g
Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi cassiae 6 g
Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis praeparata 6 g
Sheng Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis recens 5 slices
Da Zao Fructus Ziziphi jujubae 5 dates
Yi Tang Saccharum granorum 30 g
Gan Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis 3 g
Explanation The original formula was left almost unchanged except for the addition
of Gan Jiang to strengthen its action of warming the Middle Burner.
Due to the short duration of her problem, this condition was cleared up
in a few weeks.
Dietary Advice
The patient should avoid eating too much cold-energy foods such as salads and fruit, although a
small amount of such food eaten in conjunction with cooked food is acceptable.
