  • Huang Bo and Huang Lian clear Heat and drain Dampness.


Variations


These variations apply to all the above four prescriptions.



  • If there is severe pain add Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis yanhusuo.

  • If the manifestations of Dampness are very pronounced add (or increase) Huang Qin
    Radix Scutellariae baicalensis, Huang Bo Cortex Phellodendri and Yi Yi Ren Semen
    Coicis lachryma jobi.

  • If there is blood in the stools add Qian Cao Gen Radix Rubiae cordifoliae, Huai Hua Flos
    Sophorae japonicae immaturus, or Di Yu Radix Sanguisorbae officinalis. If the bleeding
    is profuse and occurs every day, integrate the treatment indicated in this chapter with the
    principles outlined in the chapter on bleeding (Chapter 30).


Retention of Food


Clinical Manifestations


Abdominal pain which is worse on pressure and after eating, a feeling of fullness in the
abdomen, belching, sour regurgitation, diarrhoea which relieves the abdominal pain,
constipation.


Tongue: thick coating.


Pulse: Slippery.


This condition may manifest either with diarrhoea or constipation. If the Spleen is weak there
will be a tendency to diarrhoea.


Treatment Principle


Dissolve food accumulation, eliminate stagnation.
