to move Liver-Qi and drain Fire. This pill is excellent for stagnation
deriving from emotional stress. After a few weeks, attention was turned
to treating the underlying deficiency of Spleen and Lungs as well with
two remedies: Xiao Yao Wan Free and Easy Wanderer Pill to move
Liver-Qi and tonify Spleen-Qi and Liu Jun Zi Wan Six Gentlemen Pill
to tonify Lungs and Spleen.
This patient's reaction to treatment even surpassed my expectations as
her abdominal pain went completely after only 2 acupuncture
treatments. However, I continued to treat her for 3 months until there

Abdominal Pain: Stagnation of Liver-Qi-Male, Age 40
A 40-year-old man had been suffering from abdominal pain and distension for "a long time". The
distension was particularly pronounced and was aggravated by emotional strain. His bowel
movements alternated between constipation and diarrhoea. He felt easily tired and was very
tense. His tongue was slightly Red on the sides, Swollen, and had a yellow coating (Plate
16.1(389)). His pulse was slightly Wiry and Rapid.
Diagnosis This is a clear case of Liver-Qi stagnation. Stagnant Liver-Qi is just
about to turn into Liver-Fire as evidenced by the slightly Red sides of
the tongue.
Treatment principle The principle of treatment used was to move Liver-Qi and eliminate
stagnation. This patient was treated with herbs and acupuncture.
Acupuncture The main acupuncture points, needled with reducing method to
eliminate stagnation and reinforcing method to tonify the Spleen, were
selected from the following:
SP-4 Gongsun and P-6 Neiguan to open the Penetrating Vessel and
regulate Qi in the abdomen.HE-7 Shenmen to calm the Mind.LIV-3 Taichong and G.B.-34 Yanglingquan to move Liver-Qi.
