Explanation



  • Xiao Hui Xiang, Gan Jiang and Rou Gui warm the Lower Burner and scatter Cold.

  • Yan Hu Suo, Mo Yao, Pu Huang and Wu Ling Zhi move Blood and eliminate stasis.
    Yan Hu Suo is specific to stop pain from stasis of Blood.

  • Dang Gui, Chuan Xiong and Chi Shao harmonize Blood.


Variations


This formula is warming and is therefore suitable for treating stasis of Blood with a background
of Cold and Yang deficiency.



  • If there are no prominent signs of Cold, eliminate Gan Jiang and Rou Gui or reduce their
    dosages.

  • If there are signs of Heat, eliminate Gan Jiang and Rou Gui, increase the dosage of Chi
    Shao and add Mu Dan Pi Cortex Moutan radicis.

  • If the abdominal pain follows abdominal surgery with resulting adhesions add Ze Lan
    Herba Lycopi lucidi, Hong Hua Flos Carthami tinctorii, and Tao Ren Semen Persicae.

  • If there is bleeding from stasis of Blood increase the dosage of Pu Huang and add San Qi
    Radix Notoginseng.
