Explanation
- Yi Tang, Zhi Gan Cao and Da Zao are sweet in taste: they tonify Qi and stop pain of an
Empty nature. - Gui Zhi and Sheng Jiang warm the channels and expel Cold.
- Bai Shao, in combination with Gan Cao, stops pain.
Variations
- If the condition is characterized by both a Deficiency and an Excess with pronounced
Cold in the Intestines, add Gao Liang Jiang Rhizoma Alpiniae officinari and Gan Jiang
Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis. - If the deficiency of Qi is pronounced add Huang Qi Radix Astragali membranacei: this
addition transforms the above formula into Huang Qi Jian Zhong Tang Astragalus
Strengthening the Centre Decoction. - If there are pronounced symptoms of Dampness add Bai Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis
macrocephalae, Fu Ling Sclerotium Poriae cocos and Yi Yi Ren Semen Coicis lachryma
jobi. - If there are symptoms of retention of food add Shan Zha Fructus Crataegi, Lai Fu Zi
Semen Raphani sativi and Shen Qu Massa Fermentata Medicinalis.
