Durkee and Crews medal for TKHS at Portage Invitational

It was warmer than
expected and more humid
than usual in early October,
but Thornapple Kellogg
freshman Ava Crews man-
aged to take another little
slice off of her personal
record time.
Crews was one of two
medalists for the TK varsity
girls’ cross country team
Saturday in the Division 2

race at the annual Portage
Invitational behind Portage
West Middle School.
Crews placed ninth in a
field of over 300 runners,
hitting the finish line in 19
minutes 22.4 seconds.
Senior teammate Jessica
Durkee also scored a medal
with her 49th-place time of
20:34.3.
TK girls’ head coach Sam
Wilkinson was really as
concerned about how things

went at the start of his girls
“Portage is always nutbar
and this year was no excep-
tion,” Wilkinson said. “It
once again featured the first
300 meters of the race
course shaking from the
footfalls of the hundreds of
runners competing not only
for position in the race, but
space on the earth beneath
them. The varsity team’s
objective today was to run a
solid race, experience the
course for regionals, learn
something from it, and to
not fall down in the first
300 meters.
“By and large these goals
were met.”
The top five for the TK

ladies Saturday also includ-
ed sophomore Holly Velting
placing 125th in 22:06.1,
junior Lindsey Velting
197th in 23:22.9 and junior
Lucy VanDemark 210th in
23:40.8.
East Grand Rapids won
the Division 2 girls’ race
with 88 points, ahead of
Petoskey 120, Forest Hills
Eastern 167 and Grand
Rapids Christian 211 in the
top five. TK was 21st over-
all with 583 points.
Crews was one of only
three girls in the top ten to
run a new personal record
under the conditions on the
hilly track in Portage. The
others were Chippewa Hills

senior Sarah Storey who
was fourth in 18:41.0 and
West Michigan Aviation
sophomore Emma DeVries
who was seventh in 19:15.1.
East Grand Rapids soph-
omore Drew Muller was the
individual champ with a
time of 18:21.8. The top six
girls all finished in less than
19 minutes. Muller was a
little over 11 seconds ahead
of the runner-up, Grand
Rapids Christian senior
Madelyn Frens.
Sophomore Lucas Van
Meter led the TK boys’
team in Portage with a
157th-place time of 18:47.2.
Senior Camden Reynolds
also came across the finish

line in less than 19 minutes,
placing 162nd in 18:51.3.
Senior teammate Matthew
Smith was just off that
19-minute mark with a
177th-place time of 19:01.0.
The top five for TK also
included sophomore Kaden
Hamming 236th in 20:05.
and senior Benjamin
Trudell 243rd in 20:14.4.
The boys’ team title went
to Grand Rapids Christian
which finished with 121
points. Chelsea scored 166
points, with St. Clair third
with 256, Fremont 257 and
Petoskey 261.
TK’s boys were 37th
with 968 points in a field of
46 teams.

Caledonia/Lowell/South
Christian sophomore diver
Mayari Coriano-Lahiff
was head and shoulders
above the competition at
the Oct. 2 Ottawa Hills
Invitational.
Coriano-Lahiff won the
diving competition with
343.20 points, besting
Abigail Dumond, a fresh-

man from the Delton
Kellogg/Thornapple
Kellogg/Hastings team by
29 points for the top spot.
Dumond had a strong score
of 314.20 herself.
Senior Maggie Sova had
one of the top finishes at
the meet for the CLS
Vikings, placing third in the
100-yard breaststroke with
a time of 1 minute 16.
seconds.
The top relay finishes for
the CLS girls came in the
200-yard medley relay and
the 200-yard freestyle relay
where Viking teams placed
fifth.
Emmory VanHofwegen,
Sova, Becky Darter and
Isabella Leason placed fifth
in the 200-yard medley
relay with a time of
2:05.28. In the 200-yard
freestyle relay, that same
foursome placed fifth in
1:48.96.
East Kentwood took the
day’s championship with
622 points, beating out
Forest Hills Northern/
Eastern’s 575 points. CLS
was sixth at the nine-team
meet, and a trimmed down
DK/TK/HHS team finished
in that ninth spot.
OK Red Conference foes
like East Kentwood make
things tough on and push
the CLS girls all fall long.
West Ottawa scored a 192-
100 win over the CLS girls
Oct. 7.

The West Ottawa girls
won every event in the
conference dual. One of
the highlights of the eve-
ning came at the end, with
Sova and West Ottawa
freshman Makenzie
Baldwin squaring off in the
100-yard breaststroke.
Baldwin got the better of
Sova this time, touching
the wall in 1:17.15 just
ahead of the CLS senior’s

time of 1:17.90.
CLS held its senior night
at the pool in Jenison Oct.
14, and the girls will be a
part of another Ottawa Hills
Invitational today (Oct. 16).
CLS concludes the OK Red
Conference duals at
Rockford this Thursday,
Oct. 21.

on the ball to thwart the
high-arching pass with 48
seconds to go.
“I thought our kids
played with great effort on
both sides of the ball,”
coach Pennington said.
“Yeah, we did have the lead
and even on that last drive
yeah, we had guys open.
Mason couldn’t really set
his feet on that last pass, we
had a guy running wide
open. We had Brock and it
was right there, just gotta
make a play.
“It is disappointing
because your kids prepare so

hard, and they’re right there
and you don’t make it hap-
pen. Hats off to them. They
made a couple more plays
than we did.”
“Our kids played with
great effort, great spirit,
they’ve got great fight.”
Ahrens gave the Rams
the early edge in the ball-
game, finishing a drive that
lasted 6 minutes and 11 sec-
onds and covered 80 yards
with an 8-yard TD run
around the right side.
Rockford tacked on a
32-yard field goal by
Jackson Burkholder with

5:30 to play in the second
quarter to lead 10-0.
McKenzie was 10-of-
passing in the ballgame for
116 yards. He rushed 13
times for 80 yards, and had a
big run to set up the Scots’
first touchdown. Townsend
finished with 13 rushes for
42 yards. Reed had a team-
high three receptions for 36
yards.
McKenzie spread the ball
around. Townsend had two
catches for 32 yards. Nick
Fox had two catches for 31
yards. Evan Graham had two
catches as well, for 14 yards.

“We have to do better
offensively in a game like
that,” coach Pennington
said. “We struggled getting
drives going. We didn’t con-
vert third downs. There were
a few third downs where we
needed to complete a pass
and didn’t do it. We were
just out of our rhythm a little
bit on offense all night, and
I was disappointed with
that.”
Defensively, Luke
Mandsager had a team-high
nine tackles for the Scots.
Theren Saunders added 7.
tackles and Ben Norris six.

Ahren was 11-of-21 pass-
ing for the Rams, for 97
yards. He rushed 24 times
for 100 yards. VandenHout
was the Rams’ number two
rushers with three carries
for 38 yards and added
seven receptions for 61
yards.
“We just spent a week
getting our kids fired up,
because we thought we had
a great shot over here to win
against Rockford and put
ourselves in position to win
the league,” coach
Pennington said.
“Ultimately, we didn’t get it

done so it is disappointing,
but you have to remember
too we get in the playoffs
we’re playing in Division 2,
and we just took the number
one team in Division 1 to
the last play of the game. We
have a lot to hang our hat on
still this year and the
Fighting Scots aren’t going
away. We’re going to con-
tinue to show up and play
and get better.
Caledonia was scheduled
to host Jenison last night,
Oct. 15, and will close the
regular season Oct. 29
against Hudsonville.
