Modern Spanish Grammar: A Practical Guide

(lily) #1

66.1.2 Gracias por+ infinitive/noun

Gracias por... , ‘thank you for.. .’, is the most frequent of the more specific
expressions and it is common in the spoken language, both formal and informal.

Gracias por venir.
Thank you for coming.

Muchas gracias por tu consejo.
Thank you very much/many thanks for your advice.

 25.1.23.1 (p. 127)

66.1.3 Le/te agradezco (mucho) (+ noun)

Le agradezco... , ‘I’m grateful to you.. .’, from agradecer, ‘to be grateful’, ‘to thank’,
conveys more force and it is more formal than the expression above; it is found in the
spoken as well as in the written language.
Le agradezco (mucho) la información.
I’m (very) grateful for the information.

Te agradezco (mucho) tu regalo. Es precioso.
Thank you (very much) for your present. It’s beautiful.

66.1.4 Le/te agradezco (mucho)+el haber+ past participle

This expression, which in English is expressed as ‘I’m very grateful to you for’+ gerund,
goes one step further in the expression of gratitude and is more likely to be found in
formal contexts, both in the spoken and the written language. Note that the reference
here is to the past, that is, the speaker is thanking someone for having done something.
Hence the use of haber+ past participle in Spanish.

 16.1.1.7 (p. 62)
Le agradezco mucho el haberme ayudado.
I’m very grateful to you for helping me.
Te agradezco mucho el habérselo dicho.
I’m very grateful to you for telling him/her.

66.1.5 Le/te agradezco (mucho)+que+ perfect subjunctive

This construction conveys the same degree of gratitude as the one in 66.1.4 above, and,
as you can see from the examples below, they are interchangeable. As with the previous
expression, reference here is to the past. Notice how Spanish and English differ here in
terms of structure: ... que+ perfect subjunctive expresses ‘... for’+ gerund.

 16.1.1.7 (p. 62)
Le agradezco mucho que me haya ayudado.
I’m very grateful to you for helping me.

Te agradezco mucho que se lo hayas dicho.
I’m very grateful to you for telling him/her.
