Rainbow Tier II’s best battle
for titles next weekend

It is postseason time for
the Delton Kellogg/
Thornapple Kellogg/
Hastings varsity girls’ swim-
ming and diving team.
The DK/TK/HHS girls
will host the annual OK
Rainbow Conference Tier II
Championship at the
Community Education and
Recreation Center Nov. 5-6,
with preliminary races Friday
and the finals on Saturday.
DK/TK/HHS closed out
the 2021 regular season with
an 81-74 non-conference
victory over visiting
Charlotte in Hastings
Thursday evening.
Sophia Marcukaitis and
Cadence VanOoy won two
individual events each for
the DK/TK/HHS girls.
VanOoy won the 200-yard
freestyle in 2 minutes 19.
seconds and later captured
the 100-yard backstroke title
in 1:11.07. Marcukaitis won
the 100-yard breaststroke in
1:11.35 and the 200-yard
individual medley in 2:24.21.
DK/TK/HHS had the top
two scoring performances in
the 200 IM, with Preslee Hall
second in 2:37.91. Hall
added a victory in the 100-
yard butterfly later in the
meet with a time of 1:08.32.
Abby Marcukaitis,
Sophia Marcukaitis, Hall and
Holly Carpenter teamed up
to win the 200-yard medley
relay at the start of the night
in 2:00.56.
Abby Marcukaitis added
a winning time of 26.15 sec-
onds in the 50-yard freestyle
for her team. The DK/TK/
HHS girls swam a number of
exhibition races on the night.
Marcukaitis’ senior team-
mate Ellen Shults had the
second best time in the 50
freestyle at 30.49 seconds.
Lizzie Middleton had the
second-best time for DK/TK/
HHS in the 200-yard free-
style at 2:21.57.
The top three divers all
scored placing 1-2-3 for DK/
TK/HHS. Freshman Abigail
Dumond won it with a score
of 210.05 points. Junior Eve
Bishop was second with
198.90 points and sopho-
more TJ Myers third with a
score of 168.40.
DK/TK/HHS also had
the senior foursome of
Shults, Lily Foy, Paige
Robins and Abby Marcukaitis
win the 200-yard freestyle
relay in 2:05.30. The exhibi-
tion team of freshman Malia
Hamby, Sophia Marcukaitis,
Erin Daniels and Ainsley
Parsons had a strong time in
that event as well, finishing
in 2:02.71.
The team of Middleton,
VanOoy, Daniels and Shults
put together a time of 4:33.
in an exhibition run of the
400-yard freestyle relay,
which was the best time of
the night.
Middleton won the 500-
yard freestyle in 6:25.11,
beating out the Orioles’ Carly
Culver by just over two sec-
onds. Carpenter had an exhi-
bition time of 6:11.36 in the
race.
Foy had the 100-yard
freestyle win for DK/TK/
HHS, finishing in 1:06.69.

TK ladies knock off Knights in
five to close regular season

Things are going well for
the Thornapple Kellogg var-
sity volleyball team as the
postseason approaches.
The Trojans finished off a
run of three consecutive vic-
tories to close out the regular
season by scoring an 18-25,
26-24, 22-25, 25-16, 15-
win over Kenowa Hills in the
final OK Gold Conference
match of the season Tuesday
at Kenowa Hills High
School.
“We played together with
enthusiasm and fight,” TK
head coach Tia Cross said of
the win over the Knights.”
The Trojans have spent
the rest of this week prepar-
ing for the opening of the
MHSAA Division 1 state
tournament. TK will host
Caledonia Monday at 6 p.m.
for a district opener, with the
winner of that match moving
on to the Wednesday semifi-
nals at Byron Center High
School and a match-up with
Kalamazoo Central. Gull
Lake and Byron Center meet
in the other district semifinal
match Wednesday.
The district final is
planned for Thursday at 6
p.m. at Byron Center High
School.
Tristen Cross had a team-
high 11 kills for the Trojans
in that regular season finale.
Alana Compton contributed
seven kills. Charlotte Nelson
led the Trojans with 13
assists and fellow setter
Jessie Drenten had 11.
Compton had a team-
high four blocks.
Kiah Nichols, the
Trojans’ senior libero, had a
team-high 32 digs. Peyton
Pratt added 22 digs and
Tristen Cross had 15.
Setter Charlotte Nelson led the Trojans with 13 assists as they knocked off
Kenowa Hills in five sets in the final match of the regular season Tuesday. TK
