BASIC HAND POSES

TENSE hAND

Start with an eggcup
shape, with one side lon-
ger than the other. Close
the top with a curved
line. Add a center line at
the base of the palm, and
lines for the wrist.

Draw four circles across
your top line: these will be
the knuckle joints. Now
add a line from each circle
to give you the outer
line of each finger.

Add an ellipse to the
end of each line and use
these to position the
first joint of each finger.
Add a second joint to
the finger closest to you.

Refine the main lines of
your hand and fingers,
and add a nail to the
closest finger. Then indi-
cate the creases on the
back of the hand.

Ink in all your main lines,
around the wrist, palm,
and all the fingers. Ink the
creases on the back of the
hand and on the finger
joints you can see.

You can see here how the finger joints operate. Beginning with the knuckles, each
joint folds in on itself until the hand becomes a closed ball. The fingers here are not
clenched tightly enough to make a fist, but show a degree of tension.
