In 1969 Durocher pushed his players
for week after week without the rest
they begged for in the hot, humid
Midwestern summer, so much so that
they turned against him. He ragged
his star third baseman, Ron Santo,
who was weak from diabetes, as
cowardly, until, Santo remembered
later, “I grabbed Leo and had him
around the neck. I could have killed
him.” Durocher also encouraged fans
to throw batteries and metal spikes at
teams so frequently that they played
harder than ever against him too.
Reporters quipped that he was able
to turn any success into failure. The
Cubs collapsed, losing game after
game. And the hated New York Mets
won the pennant. To Durocher this

How tough do you need to be to
succeed? Eddie Jones’s supporters would
say he runs a tight ship, but necessarily
so; and some of the many staff who have
left the England head coach’s set-up
would say he can go too far. An almost-
forgotten character from baseball’s
history went considerably further.

In 1946, 75 years ago, the combative
manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers
baseball team, Leo Durocher, was
sitting with a group of newspapermen
in the Dodgers’ old brick-walled
Ebbets Field. As the opposing team,
the New York Giants, jogged up from
their dugout for batting practice,
Durocher gestured in their direction.
“All nice guys,” he said. “They lose a
ball game, they go home, they have a
nice dinner.” The reporter beside him
— Frank Graham of the Journal-
American — let Durocher continue.
“All nice guys. They’ll finish last.”
Graham was good at shorthand, and
knew he was on to a winner. Above
his article in the next day’s paper the
Journal-American’s headline writers
had boiled down Durocher words,
and the famous phrase “nice guys
finish last” had been born. Durocher

who went too far

needed to act the way he did, or at
least he thought he needed to, for he
was a small, wiry man, the sort easily
picked on in a clubhouse. It did not
help that in his playing days he had
been far from a gifted batter. Babe
Ruth once said that Durocher could
not hit the floor even if he was
dropping a cigarette. All he had were
good reflexes — he became a quick
infielder — and, above all, the ability
to hustle.
As a manager, Durocher intimidated
umpires, threatened journalists, told
his pitchers to hit opponents in
the head with their fast balls (a
potentially fatal act in an era before
helmets) and installed a telescope to
steal opposing teams’ signs.
The year of his remark to Graham,
everything worked, and Durocher’s
Brooklyn Dodgers did well. The blue-
collar Brooklyn fans loved his style.
They resented wealthy Manhattanites
who could hide their privilege behind
a mask of genteel manners.
But the next year, Durocher was
fired for going too far — rigging card
games against his own players hadn’t
helped — and ended up moving
through the league, sometimes with
great success, sometimes not, until
finally, pulling strings, in the mid-

1960s he was able to get himself a job
managing the Chicago Cubs.
The new role should have been a
chance to bring his career to a
triumphal end. In mid-August of the
1969 season his team were so far in
front it seemed a World Series that
autumn was inevitable. But his
inability to avoid over-attacking
brought Chicago’s success to an end.
Publicity agents tried to present
him as a loveable curmudgeon, but
the reality was different. Once,
outraged by a fan who he felt had
insulted him, he had the poor man
dragged to a side room and held
steady while he punched him over
and over again in the face, shattering
his jaw, as court records later showed.

was incomprehensible. Even worse,
the Mets manager, Gil Hodges, was
known as one of the most decent men
in baseball. Yet here he was the one
finishing first.
The point is not that unfair or
constantly furious coaches never
succeed. There are plenty of examples
in sport, or business, or the military
where this approach succeeds. It’s just
that this is not the only way forward.
Often it isn’t even wise. Terror and
humiliation can indeed work on the
sports field — young players
especially will push very hard to avoid
being berated that way — but it also
stores up problems. Players and junior
staff become resentful and the
bullying manager also ends up
blinding himself. For who is going to
tell him the truth of what’s going on?
The habit of not bothering about
fairness corrodes everything else.
When Eddie Jones’s defence coach
John Mitchell quit this year, it wasn’t
because his feelings had been hurt by
Jones raising his voice. Jones had
abruptly told Mitchell that a long-
promised family day off was
cancelled, and he didn’t bother to
explain why. This wasn’t being “tough
but effective”. This was being a dick.
Mitchell left — and with him went all
the wisdom he could have offered
from those years with the All Blacks
and elsewhere.
Coaches who succeed can’t make it
if they are over tender, but they just
do not need to be bullies. Players
recognise the path in-between, and
respond well to fairness, even hard
fairness. What they do not need —
and what Durocher’s career shows
easily leads to failure — is the sort of
lashing unfairness that may make an
insecure manager happy, but which
