He gave him detailed instructions.Billy sent Woody copies of
British church magazines and wrote a lengthy, well-constructed
letter with many specific ideas. He told his editor he “was con-
vinced profound truths could be expressed in simple language,”
that he “wanted the magazine to be relevant, thought-provoking,
timely, spiritual, devotional, yet with a breezy, easy-to-read style.”
Along with detailed instructions, he ended a letter with both a
challenge and warmth. “This is quite a big order; however, I
believe it can be done and will meet a real need. I believe the Lord
has led you to this important ministry and am thankful for your
willingness to obey His voice in this matter. With warmest per-
sonal greetings, Billy Graham.”
This letter and other communiqués sparked Woody to lift his
horizons and give it his all. Billy had freed him to create the new
publication but within the parameters of Billy’s vision.
In addition, Billy wrote a long purpose statement about the
magazine’s mission, its audience, its tone, and its content, which
appeared in the first issue. He focused personally on the tasks with
the greatest impact.
He kept up the drumbeat of communication.Billy continued to
write to his new editor with all sorts of ideas about style, length,
theological emphasis. “These early issues,” he wrote, “will be of
strategic importance, as they will be analyzed and studied by reli-
gious leaders around the world. I hope you will put the best of
everything into it.”
The letter made Woody realize the high stakes involved and
kept him focused on the quality expected.
After the first issue came out, Billy wrote, “Dear Woody: Just
a note to say I have read through your manuscript for the first
issue of Decision. I think it is terrific!” That simple declaration lifted
Woody’s spirits and kept him energized for the next issues.
He supported and defended him. On one occasion, Woody had
interviewed a prominent person, then sent the edited version to
the interviewee—who strongly objected to a deletion! He said the
interview must run in its entirety or not at all. Unfortunately,
Woody believed the deleted material was not acceptable, yet he
