of the approximately 7,000 languages spoken on earth, only a handful
are widely taught, and many are hardly ever taught. As a result, the less
commonly-taught languages do not have nearly the same level of resources
(textbooks, trained teachers, opportunities for secure employment, scholars
who specialize in the language) as languages that have a long history of
support by the educational establishment.

It is also sometimes said that the items on each level consist of items on the
next lower level: clauses consist of phrases, phrases of words, words of
morphemes, etc.
