Caledonia wrestling adds a

state qualifier at heavyweight

Brett Bremer
Sports Editor
The Caledonia varsity
wrestling team will see some
talented grapplers when its
opens its 2021-2022 season
at home with a quad
Wednesday where it will face
Lakewood and Delton
Kellogg.
Each of those squads
brings back a state champion
and a few state qualifiers
overall. Delton Kellogg
brings back Division 4 215-
pound champion Caden
Ferris, who has already inked
his plans to join the Central
Michigan University pro-
gram next winter. The
Lakewood team features the
MHSAA Division 3 125-
pound state champion from a
year ago Zac Gibson.
Leading the Scots into the
season opening duals is
Roger Singleton who is
entering his tenth season
leading the Caledonia pro-
gram.
The Fighting Scots were
11-12 in duals a year ago and
finished in the top four in the
OK Red Conference, a feat
in itself.
Caledonia has a returning
state qualifier of its own in
285-pound senior Andrew
DeVries who qualified for
the Division 2 Finals wres-
tling for Zeeland East last
winter. Coach Singleton is
also happy to welcome in
senior Arie Idrizi, a senior at
Caledonia for the first time
after moving into the district
from Middleville.
Singleton said he has a
strong senior class overall
with six to seven seniors who
will be in the line-up through-
out the year. The senior

group includes DeVries as
well as Benjamin Norris,
Caleb Carr, Beck Owen,
Isaiah Short, Idrizi, James
Hall and Ethan Knapp.
He would like to be able to
pull a few more kids into the
program. He currently has
just under 30 wrestlers set to
go this season.
While there are eight or
nine guys back for the Scots
this winter, the program’s

only two regional qualifiers
in Division 1 from a year ago
both graduated.
Coach Singleton said he
believes that if his team can
stay healthy it is capable of
finishing in the top three in
the OK Red Conference this
season and maybe even earn-
ing a Division 1 District
Championship. He expects
Rockford and Grandville to
be the top two teams in the

OK Red this season.
Caledonia opens the OK
Red Conference season at
Rockford Jan. 7.
It is tournament time after
the Scots’ quad next week.
They will be a part of the
Greenville Invitational Dec.
11, the Kent County
Championship at East
Kentwood Dec. 18 and at the
Portage Central Invitational
Dec. 29.
