THE SEA: A TREASURY OF BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE
NATURAL PRODUCTS
Electron micrograph of myosin
- The concentration of halides in the ocean is approximately 0.5 M in chloride,
1mM in bromide, and 1μM in iodide. - Marine organisms have incorporated halogen atoms into the structures of many of
their metabolites: - For the marine organisms that make the metabolites, some of these molecules are
part of defense mechanisms that serve to promote the species’ survival by
deterring predators or inhibiting the growth of competing organisms. - For humans, the vast resource of marine natural products shows great potential as
a source of new therapeutic agents.
- Halomon: in preclinical evaluation as a cytotoxic agent against certain tumor
cell types.
