I shoot thee

Lauren Scott reveals her
first-time wedding tips

edding season is already in full
swing, and this year I was lucky
enough to photograph a friend’s
wedding – my first wedding, in
fact. I was a little terrified at the thought of
capturing someone’s special day without any
prior experience, but had garnered plenty of
advice from pros before the big day itself.
There were several key tips that kept cropping
up from them all: enjoy yourself, stay calm,
and let the photos flow. After all, they wouldn’t
have asked me if they didn’t trust me.
I’m a wildlife photographer by training,
and photographing people has only come
as an offshoot of working for years on a
photography magazine. That being said, I find
that there’s always also something inherently
curious and satisfying about documenting
people. What better way to do it than on an
emotional day that brings together families,
friends and long-lost acquaintances in
what is, after all, a giant celebration?
The day itself was beautiful – not too hot or
too cold, and with a bright and bold morning
sun that became diffused and overcast
towards midday. If you’re wondering how
to approach shooting your first wedding, I’ll
share what I learnt over the page. Above all,
go with the flow and you’re bound to create
some beautiful images to cherish...
