of the day where you’ll find
landscape photographers
braving the elements in
pursuit of the perfect light. These times
are widely known as ‘the golden hour’.
On many occasions, seemingly more
often than not, the clouds come in and
no colour floods into the sky – but on
those occasions where the elements align
perfectly for detail-filled colourful skies,
it can almost feel like winning the lottery.
With colourful light bathing the scene
it’s often tempting to leave things exactly
how they are. And why not? If all the
elements are in place, your work as
a photographer is almost done.
But what if you could make the shot
look even better by accentuating and
controlling those amazing colours? Here
are four simple techniques that will give
your golden-hour shots the photographic
finish they truly deserve.

GET THE LOOK

Enhance sunset colour
Press I to activate the Eyedropper
Tool. Set Sample Size to 3 by 3
Average before clicking on a vivid
pink cloud to sample the colour. Next, click the
Create New Fill Or Adjustment Layer icon – the
half-white, half-black circle at the bottom of the
Layers panel – select Solid Color and click OK.
Set the Blending Mode to Soft Light. Click on
the white Layer Mask, then go to Image > Apply
Image and click OK – do this a second time.
