Artists & Illustrators 49MASTERCLASS3 INTRODUCE GREY TONES``````I am using the Harmonic Shadows technique. This involves mixing a grey from each of thethree primary colours that will be used laterin the painting process, thus having ashadow colour that is in harmony with thesubject. The same grey is used for the wholefl ower – petals and foliage. Here I mixedPermanent Yellow (yellow), Winsor Blue RedShade (blue) and Perylene Violet (red).``````2 FIND THE SHADOWS``````Working wet-in-wet, I start painting in theshadows, following the tonal map in mysketchbook. I fi rst wet the paper with purewater, making sure the covering is even andvery wet, but not enough to form a puddle.I then add the shadow colour, letting thepaint spread while guiding it gently with adamp brush.``````1 START WITH A SKETCH``````I always start with a drawing in mysketchbook. I draw loosely and erase a lot.Using a sketchbook and transferring thedrawing saves me from unsightly marks onthe fi nished painting. The sketch includessome colour samples and a quick tone study, providing enough information in case mysubject expires before I am done, whichhappens all too regularly. >``````sandrine’s tools:### • PAPERSaunders Waterford 640gms Hot Pressed- BRUSHES Prolene Plus Series 007 size 12, 8, 5, 2 and size 000- COLOUR Daler Rowney Lemon Yellow, Daler Rowney Permanent Yellow, Daniel Smith New Gamboge, Winsor & Newton Winsor Orange, Winsor & Newton Perylene Violet, Winsor & Newton Winsor Blue Red Shade, Talens Rembrandt Sap Green, Winsor & Newton Titanium White- MAPED PUTTY RUBBER,PLASTIC RUBBER AND PENCIL- SKETCHBOOK WITHCARTRIDGE PAPER- PORCELAIN PALETTE- COTTON CLOTHafi eld of sunfl owers is the very symbolof summer. Capture a glimpse of thestrong, bright yellows, the rich greenfoliage and you can imagine yourself onholiday in a place where you open theshutters every morning greeted by thewarmth of sunshine. In this masterclass I will show you how tomix the right colours and paint soft washes torecreate the serene splendour of this much-loved summer fl ower. We will progress fromsketch to painting, which will start with awash of neutral shadows to give form anddepth to the subject. This tonal wash will befollowed with three or four layers of colour, painted wet-in-wet and often mixed directlyonto the paper to allow the pigments to movearound and blend in a serendipitous manner. When all the washes have been laid on thepetals and foliage, we can start painting thefi ne details, fi rst damp-on-dry and fi nally witha tiny brush and dry strokes for the fi nishingtouches, such as the hairs on the stem.http://www.sandrinemaugy.com``````Daler Rowney Lemon Yellow, Daler Rowney``````Gamboge, Winsor & Newton Winsor Orange,Winsor & Newton Perylene Violet, Winsor &48 Masterclass.indd 49 08/06/2016 16:51
