STILE AND RAIL doors:
4.3.10.1 For EXTERIOR applications shall be glued up with TYPE I ADHESIVE.

4.3.10.2 For INTERIOR applications shall be glued up with TYPE I or II ADHESIVE at the manufacturer’s
option.
4.3.10.3 SPECIAL stile or rail requirements to accommodate specified hardware shall prevail.

4.3.10.4 Of SOFTWOOD shall be solid-stock or veneer construction.
4.3.10.5 Of HARDWOOD shall be:

4.3.10.5.1 SOLID-STOCK or VENEER construction. M

C O N S T R U C T I O N


The construction of the STILES and RAILS:
4.3.10.6.1 If SOLID STOCK requires:

4.3.10.6.1.1 ONE-PIECE solid stock.
4.3.10.6.1.2 TWO-PIECE balanced lamination, with opposing grain.
4.3.10.6.1.3 THREE-PIECE lamination, balanced outer pieces, with opposing
grain, and:
4.3.10.6.1.3.1 Face veneers shall be uniform in thickness.

4.3.10.6.1.4 No FINGER JOINTS.
4.3.10.6.1.5 EDGE GLUING in accordance with Section 3.
4.3.10.6.2 If VENEERED requires:
4.3.10.6.2.1 CORES of either MDF (medium-density fiberboard), SCL (structural
composite lumber), edge-glued wood blocks/strips (staved core),
particleboard, agrifiber, laminated veneer lumber core, fire-resistant
composite core, and speciality door core types.
4.3.10.6.3 If STAVED CORE (edge-glued wood block/strips), it shall be of one species in any
one door, and the:
4.3.10.6.3.1 STAVES (block/strips):
4.3.10.6.3.1.1 Shall not exceed 2” (50.8 mm) in WIDTH.
4.3.10.6.3.1.2 May be of any LENGTH.

4.3.10.6.3.1.3

Shall have STAGGERED END JOINTS in adjacent
rows.
4.3.10.6.3.1.4 Shall not permit VOIDS between end joints.
4.3.10.6.3.1.5 Shall not permit open SURFACE DEFECTS.
4.3.10.6.3.1.6 Shall be bonded together under pressure.

P A N E L S 


With PANELS require:
4.3.10.7.1 They be finished to a uniform thickness and fit snuggly into the stile and rail retention
groves, and that:
4.3.10.7.1.1 They FLOAT in their method of retention, and that:
4.3.10.7.1.1.1 MECHANICAL FASTENING is not permitted.
4.3.10.7.2 MDF (medium-density fiberboard) may be used for opaque finish, and:
4.3.10.7.2.1 At EXTERIOR doors, it shall be moisture-resistant.
4.3.10.7.3 GRAIN shall run the long direction of the panel.
