Data networks are used to share resources and exchange information
between network users and other networks. Decades ago data networks
consisted of mainframes, minicomputers and proprietary networking infra-
structure and communications protocols. Today most networks consist pri-
marily of switches, servers, industry-standard operating systems, network
and client software applications, peripheral devices and user devices.
Users typically use desktop or notebook forms of personal computers to
connect to a data network, although some of the basic PC applications are
now accessible with smart cell phones. The network connectivity of the PC
user to the network is either structured cable or a wireless access point.
Remote connectivity to the network is typically provided through a telecom-
munications service provider via a cable modem, DSL, T-1 lines or higher-
capacity telecommunications services.

Networks

A local area network (LAN) is typically deployed for a building or a cluster of
network users that have similar needs such as an administration department,
facility management department or computer laboratory (Fig. 11.1).
