Record of a Friendship

(Ben Green) #1

I always fear some neurotic mother will tum round and blame me, for
three years ago when I asked the mothers for consent, only one,
Constance, agreed. Two other mothers whose girls had been at S'hill
from 4 to 16 took them away in fear. So that I must always put
S'hill first and not be led into any conspiracy that might harm the school.
I am too old to take risks now. Old and cowardly.
It is wonderfully kind of you to try to send us an Akku. Ena is over
joyed about it, and I certainly shall use it with hope.
In Denmark the strong Communist Party is very hostile to your people
I hear. And previous admirers of my books now in the C.P. won't have
them because I believe in that awful man Reich. Your circle over there
has gone all to hell.

I was sorry to hear that you won't be here this summer. But I
think after all that you are right in awaiting your child. We shall arrange
it sometime between October and next summer. All right?
Philipson is quite a problem, and I do not know how to go about him.
He "improved" on my technique without informing anyone what the
"improvement" consists of, as is usual in scientific matters. He is out of
contact since 19 39, and still thrives on the authority in psychiatry which
he received from me. I have withdrawn completely from all old organi
sational ties and have restricted my sphere of strict influence to a few
physicians, teachers and research workers who are my personal assist
ants, my helpers. I do not want any international organisation of which
I would be the "boss." I am a very bad supervisor and police dog. The
rotten degeneration of so many great thoughts through their own
organisations, in which I partook for many years, has warned me not to
let any such organisation grow. My influence is widely spread without
any association. I have to let life take its course also in the realm of my
own creation. The old international Institute with its Scandinavian
"members" does not exist any more. Ph. does not know that he is no
member of anything. Please, tell this to the Danish people who are with
you. It is no secret. I know that Ph. is far off the track and a track far
behind even Freud, too.
