lonely church perched by a quarry.

Walk Through park gates; left beside
the pond. In ¼ mile, cross outflow
(391247); bear left; in 30m, right (yellow
arrow/YA, fingerpost) on field path. In
½ mile, join stony drive from Common
Farm; in 200m, at yellow-topped post/
YTP (389237), half-left across field. Cross
footbridge (392235); up through two
woodland belts; down to Park
Pale (396233). Right; in
50m, along golf course
edge (YAs, YTPs)
for nearly ¾ mile to
road (402228). Left;
at village green,
left (403229,
“Quarry Loop”). In
150m, right (Hollow
Road); from Cherry
Orchard house, uphill
to church (405233).
Past car park, down to
road (414235); right; in 150m,
left (YTP, YA) on Cross Britain Way. Cross
road at Park Farm (398243); descend
one field; at gate, left (396246, fenced
path) to clockwise circuit of the pond.
At road (386250), right to church.

Right along Hatterrall Ridge. In 900m,
pass trig pillar (305279); in another
600m, pass cairn (300283); in 250m, at
second cairn at crosspaths, right
(299285), then left downhill (north). In
550m, hairpin right at crosstracks
(300291), downhill to road (304289);
right to Lower Turnant. Right along
gravel driveway (308291, fingerpost).
Follow white arrows, then YA through
fields to cross footbridge (315293); back
across fields to Longtown Castle.

A lovely moorland walk for a clear
frosty winter’s day. The old walled track
from Coldwell reservoirs gives firm
ground underfoot as you follow it over
to Wycoller and the melancholy ruin of
Wycoller Hall in its dell; then back over
sheep pastures with the shoulder of
Pendle Hill as an aiming point.

Arms. In 450m, cross road (912384);
lane, then field path (911383) south past
radio mast (909378), Pasture Springs

(south) on path through trees, then
across moor (905370, yellow arrow),
aiming half-right to road beside Lower
Coldwell Reservoir (903364). Left; in
350m, left (903361), following “Pennine
Bridleway”, “Wycoller”. In 3 miles, cross
Turnhole Clough (941379); in 300m, left
(943381, “Wycoller”) down to Wycoller
