“God Talks”

In the van on the way home from the conference in Chicago, I
told all my co-workers that I had made a lifelong decision to
spend one hour a day with God—and most of them chuckled.
They knew me. They knew just how excited I got about new
things and just how quickly my exuberance diminished when
confronted with the tediousness of hard work. (They had
witnessed my numerous previous attempts to succeed at the
hottest fad diets—to no avail.)

As passionate as I was in that moment, their skepticism
powerfully motivated me to find some practical way to:
overcome my tendency to be easily distracted,
keep my word to God, and
prove them wrong!
Determined but clueless, the first morning back home after
the conference, I faced a huge dilemma: “How am I going to do
this? I’m not good at this—I never finish a project. I can hardly
sit still in a meeting. How am I going to be quiet for an hour?
How am I going to keep a commitment to pray for one hour a
day for the rest of my life?”

So I simply asked God for an idea to organize my first hour in
prayer. Within minutes a thought followed, which I assumed
was from God: Keep a written record of our conversations.
