IMAM ABU AL-FIDA' ISMA~~L IBN KATH~R 215

were the Emigrants who settled in Medina. They inherited from the Helpers (and
vice versa) instead of from their own family, based on the brotherhood pact estab-
lished between them by the Prophet (SAAS). However, when the verse "and to
everyone we have appointed agents" was revealed, this practice was abrogated.
Then He stated that the following verse, "as for those with whom you have made
agreements, give them their due", henceforth referred to help, hospitality and
advice. Inheritance was thus stopped and instead, testamentary endowment was
made for such persons."'
Im& Ahmad stated, "The following was quoted from Sufyw, 'I heard 'Asim
say, on the authority of Anas, "The Prophet (SAAS) made a pact between the
Emigrants and the Helpers in our home."' Sufyw commented, "He seems to he
saying that he established brotherhood between them."

Muhammad b. Ishnq stated, "The Messenger of God (SAAS) established
brotherhood between his fellow Emigrants and the Helpers, and said, from what
I have heard - and God forbid our atmbuting to him what he did not say - he
said, 'Become brothers in God's cause, each taking a brother for himself.'
"He then took the hand of 'Ali b. Abn Talib and said, 'This is my brother.'
"The Messenger of God (SAAS), lord of the prophets, the leader of the pious,
the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds, and the most important and peerless
of men, and 'Ali b. Abn Taib became brothers.
"Hamza b. 'Abd al-MutMib, lion of God and lion of His Messenger as well as
his uncle, and Zayd b. Haitha, the freed-man of the Messenger of God (SAAS),
became brothers. It was Zayd that Hamza appointed his heir at the battle of Uhud.
Ja'far b. Aba Dbn al-Jan?&ayn and Muah b. Jabal became brothers."
Ibn Hishm pointed out that at that time Jacfar was absent in Abyssinia.
Ibn Isbq went on: "Aba Bakr and Kh%ija b. Zayd al-Khazraji, Wmar b.
al-Kh~pb and ltbiin b. Mdik, Aba Wbayda and Sa'd b. Mu%&, 'Abd al-Ra!mi%n
b. 'Awf and Sa'd b. al-Rabic, al-Zubayr b. al-cAww?un and Salama b. Salama b.
Waqsh, all became brothers. It is also said that al-Zubayr and 'Abd AU& b. Masctid,
Wthm b. 'Affan and Aws b. Thabit b. al-Mundhir al-Najjzri, Talha b. Wbayd
Allah and Ka'b b. Md&, Sa'id b. Zayd and Ubayy b. Ka'b, Mus%b b. Wmayr and
Aba Ayyiib, Aba Hudhayfa b.Wtba and 'Abbad b. Bishr, 'Am and Hudhayfa
h. al-Yamzn al-'Absi, the ally of 'Abd al-Ashhal, all became brothers. It is also
said, however, that 'Amma and Thabit b. Qays b. Shammas became brothers."
I observe that this chain of authorities comes through two lines.
He went on, "Abii Dharr Barir b. Junzda and al-Mundhir b 'Arnr, known as
'he who hurried on to death', Hatib b. Aba Balta'a and Wwaym b. Sacida,
Salman and Abii al-Darda', Bilnl and Abn Ruwayha 'Abd All& b. 'Abd
al-Rabw al-Khath'ami, one of the Fazac- all these became brothers."
He continued, "These are the men who were named to us from among his
Companions between whom the Messenger of God (SAAS) established pacts of
brotherhood. May God be pleased with them all."
