THE
future—howitimpresseshumanity! What
burden does itcarrywith whichultimately to
crushus? Whatfulfillmentofourhopesawaits
withinit? Whatwill come tousoutofits immen-
sity? Whatwill weultimatelylose?
It was this strenuous desire to penetrate the fu-
turewhichcausedtheGod-forsakenSaultoseekout
thewitchofEndor. Heanticipated anddreadedhis
fateinthecomingbattle,andhe was determinedto
findout,ifhecould,thetrend ofevents, evenifhe
had to secure it from an agent of Satan. Butthe
evil one does notof himself knowthe future. He
may know some ofthe prophecies, and thus gauge
certain events; or hemay make shrewd guessesby
reading the effect from the cause. But even here
he is often frustrated, because at the last moment,
Godmaysendinsomeinfluencethatdirectlychanges
thecourseofevents.
