How to handle difficult
people and negative
behaviour
We all come across difficult people from time to time and we
often have to deal with the negative behaviour of both colleagues
and subordinates. If we don’t handle them well the result is frus-
tration, anger and other counterproductive activities. It is neces-
sary to understand why people can be difficult, and to be able to
anticipate problems so that they can be dealt with before they
arise.

Why people are difficult
When considering why people can be difficult it is worth remem-
bering that they may be equally convinced that it is you who is
being difficult, not them. People respond in kind. So when
assessing the situation you have to ask yourself whether the
problem is caused by your behaviour rather than theirs.
