Proportions in art
The rule of thirds is an image
composition and layout guide that
helps produce dynamic results by
superimposing a basic three-by-
three grid over a page to create
active ‘hotspots’ where the grid
lines intersect. Locating key visual
elements on hotspots helps draw
attention to them and gives an
offset balance to a composition,
while introducing proportional
spacing that helps establish an
aesthetically pleasing balance.
Painters have used the rule of thirds
for centuries, such as Portrait of a
Woman in Black Leaning on a Grand
Piano by Edoardo Gioja and The
Grand Canal from Palazzo Balbiby
Canaletto, shown here.
