To decide, bring to a conclusion
or end a design idea by working it

A compositional guide used in
design that places the subject of a

surrounding objects to give
balance and help focus viewer
attention on the main subject.

Rule of thirds
A compositional guide for
positioning key design elements
by using a three-by-three grid to
create active ‘hotspots’ where
grid lines intersect.
Sample group
A collection of five to ten people
who share the characteristics of a
target group. A sample group is
used to gain a greater
understanding via one-to-one
interviews, questionnaires and
focus groups.

Selection
The stage of the design process
where a proposed design solution
is chosen for development
because it meets the design brief.
Semiotics
