books.She was apast presidentof the Eastern
PsychologicalAssociation.Dorisembracedher
lifeinWestMilford,swimmingandboating
onPinecliffLakeandhikingintheforests.
As an ardentenvironmentalist,she wasan
environmentaltrusteeof the lake,amember
of the W. MilfordEnvironmentalCommission
and the PassaicCountyRiverCoalition.She
was an enthusiasticsupporterof the Township
Library; the environmentalsectionis namedfor
her.She was veryactivein the Town Council
and the Democratic Club.With her friendsshe
enjoyedparticipatingin activitiesfor children,
includingtheyearlysnowmancontest.

Deanpassedalonghis loveof music,lan-
guagesand sportsto his son.WhenDeanwas
only 13,he earnedaBlack Belt inTaekwondo,
and encouragedhis son to do the same.He
servedas amentorto Dean,Jr.helping
him to masterhis skills.The two also spent
manyhappyhoursbike riding,rollerblading,
skiingand playingsoccertogether.One of his
greatestgifts to his son was emphasizingthe
importanceof learningmultiplelanguages.
By the age of 10, DeanJr.was alreadyfluent
in three.
As an adultDeanexperimentedwithmany
differentcareers,includingEnglishteacher,
Spanishteacher,book seller,stocktrading,
and Skipperetc., beforeeventuallybecoming
areal estateinvestor.
Deanis survivedby his spouse,Tetianaof
Bethesda,MD;andhis youngson,Dean
Jr., fromapreviousmarriage.Heisalso
survivedby his parents,Aland LindaHinton
of Potomac,MD; andhis siblings,Donnie
Hintonof Delray Beach,FL, DonnaHinton
Aubinoeof Bethesda,MD,and DevinHinton
of Bethesda,MD,and manylovingniecesand
nephews.

Daleattendedthe BaldwinSchoolin Bryn
Mawr,distinguishingherselfbothacademically
and in her prowesson the schoolbaseball
team.She graduatedin 1947.Subsequently,
DaleenteredRadcliffeCollege,nowpartof
HarvardUniversity,andgraduatedMagnaCum
Laudewithadegreein Governmentin 1951.
Her careertookher to Washington,DC,where
she workedas acomputerprogrammerand
systemsanalystfor the U.S. Navyand then
the CivilServiceCommission(nowthe Office
of PersonnelManagement),whereshe earned
awardsfor her role in developingadatabase
thatled to automatedpay and benefitsfor
federalretirees.Afterretiring,Dalecontinued
tousehercomputerskillsasafulltimevolun-
teerfor manyyearsat the NationalMuseum
of Natural History.She was particularlyproud
of her collaborationwitharcheologistMelinda
Zeder,atthat timeassociatecurator of zooar-
chaeologyat the museum.Throughouther life,

an ironicedge.Two of his workscan be seen

and astrikingbronzesculptureof agirl jumping
rope.
Tedwas agolfer,atennisplayerand an avid
ping pongplayer.Helovedhistory,the arts and
classicalmusicand sharedhis opinionsand
interpretationswithhumor.Hewas acollector
of 60’sart andsupportedyoungartists,at
timesacceptingart in exchangefor dental
work.He wasalong-standingpatronof the
operaand localtheater.Inthe 1960shis home
was an open-housefor activists,artists,poets
and protestors.
Tedwas generousand fun-lovingwithirrever-
ent humorand greattiming.Hemade every-
one,includinghis patients,laughandfeel
comfortable.Heissurvived by his wife,
Suzanneandhischildren,AlexandraFields

wasawise and wittygrandfatherto his six

student,to over30 yearswiththe Unitarian
UniversalistChurchof ArlingtonChoirand
latersingingwiththeCharlotteSymphony
as part of the CharlotteOratorioSingersand
the UUCCChoir.Neal was trulyhappywhile
singingand his beautiful,rich baritonevoice
willbemissed.
Neal’snationalserviceincludedadistin-
guishedcareerwiththe U.S. Houseof Rep-
resentativesAppropriationsSubcommittee
onInteriorandRelatedAgencies.Hewas
particularlycommittedto protectingnature
and the environmentand his workallowed
him opportunitiesto obtainfundingfor the
NationalParkServiceandFishandWildlife
Service,amongothers.One highlightof his
careerwas advancingthe reintroductionof
wolvesto YellowstoneNationalPark. He
workedtirelesslyto helppreservenatural
resourcesandendangeredspecies.
Neallovedsharingstorieswithfriendsand
family.Heenjoyedlingeringat the tableafter
dinner,talkingand listening.Itwas during
thosetimeswhenhe sharedhis beststories
and adviceand did his bestlisteningto what
otherswantedto share.Many of Neal’s
storiesreflectedhis passionfor bicycling.He
fondlyrecalledthe morningwhen,at the
age of nine,hegot to ridewithhis older
brotherBobto delivernewspapersto the
neighborhood.Nealand Bobcontinuedto
biketogetheras adults,ridingthe Natchez
Trace and completingseveral CycleNorth
Carolinaevents.Bicyclingwasasourceof
strengthand accomplishmentfor Neal,and
he loggedover4,500milesper year for eight
straightyears.
Ridesin Arlington,VA typicallystartedout
alongthe Four MileRunstreamandhis
loveof this bikepathled him to co-chair
the Arlington/AlexandriaFour Mile Run Joint
Task Force,whichworkedwithlocal,state
and federal agenciesto revivethe stream.His
love of greenspacesled him to serveon the
ArlingtonPark and RecreationCommission
and serveas chairof the Commissionfor two
of his 13 yearsof service.
Duringthe lastmonthsof his life,Neal
foundpleasure,comfortand strengthin each
conversation,visitor letterfromcherished
familyand friends.AtNeal’srequestthere
will be no formalfuneral service.The family
will notifylovedonesin the futurewhena
celebrationof his life is scheduled.To honor
Neal’smemoryand in lieu of flowers,please
plantatree,gofor awalk in nature,and/or
makeadonationto the NationalWildlife
RefugeAssociation.

ruary13,2022,inCharlotte,NorthCarolina
in the lovingarmsof family.Born on July 14,
1943,in Charlotte,hewas the son of the late
HazelShidalSigmonand RichardLee Sigmon.
Nealwasakind, gentleand generousman
whoalwaysfoundopportunitiesto serve
his community,both locallyand nationally.
Neal’slove of placeandcommunitywas
groundedin his lovefor family.Hewas a
lovinghusbandto MaryAnn Lawler,and their
carefor eachotherwasevidentin all they
did.He wasan admiringyoungerbrother
to BobSigmon(Marian)andSueSigmon
Williams(Neil).He wasacaringfatherto
Heather,stepfatherto Melodyand Simin,and
uncleto Fred, Susan,May,and Kiran. He was
aproudgrandfatherto Nora, Neve,Jackson,
Coleman,Kayaand Lily.
NealgraduatedfromHardingHighin 1961
and DukeUniversityin 1965. He enlisted
in the Air Force in 1968,servingayear
in Vietnam.Neallivedfor morethanfour
decadesin Arlington,VA,aplacethat shaped
his serviceto community,our countryand
the earth.Duringthoseyears,his lovefor
his nativecity remained,andin 2013,he
movedto uptownCharlotte.Heand Mary
Ann enjoyedwalkingto museums,symphony
concerts,restaurantsand baseballgames,
exploringthe neighborhoodsof Charlotte
and beingapart of the city.Hewas an
activememberof the UnitarianUniversalist
Communityof Charlotte(UUCC)and volun-
teeredin multipleCharlotteschools.
Singingwasasourceof joy andcomfort
for Neal.His love of singingextendedfrom

Bornin CerroGordo,North Carolinaon Feb-
ruary25, 1928to MinnieGreenand Bert
Stephens,Jameswasthe sixthof seven
childrenbornand raised on the familyfarm
duringthe GreatDepression.His childhood
memoriesincludedworkingin the fields,
watchinghis fatherblacksmithing,prepar-
ing hamsfor the smokehouse,curingto-
baccoand swimmingin the pondwiththe
occasionalleeches.
His motherstressedthe importanceof edu-
cationand six of her childrenattendedcol-
lege.High schoolsummersaffordedJames
the opportunityto broadenhis horizonsby
workingfor his sister’shusband,Tony Ferla-
zzo,inhis QuanticoTown Pharmacy.James
graduatedas valedictorianof OrrumHigh
SchoolClassof 1945.
He followedhis brothersin attendingthe
Universityof NorthCarolina(UNC)and spent
four happyyearsin ChapelHill, graduatingin
1949 with adegreein chemistry.Hitchhik-
ing the 154 milesbetweenCerroGordoand
ChapelHill washis methodof transporta-
tion.He was amemberof AlphaTauOmega
fraternityand his bloodranCarolinaBlueto
the end. Jameswasalways“tickled”that
bothof his daughterswereUNCgraduates
whomarriedUNCgraduates.
Enteringthe U.S. MarineCorpsupongrad-
uation,JamesattendedOfficerCandidates
Schooland wasamemberof the 6th Ma-
rine BasicClass.His BasicClassmaintained
closefriendshipsandheldregular,lively
gatherings.They endedwhentherewere
too fewleft to participate.BesideOCS
andBasic,Jim receivedIntelligenceand
Amphibioustraining.His serviceincluded
commandingarifle companyin the Korean
Conflictand postingsas aideto bothGen-
eral JosephBurgerand General Randolph
Pate,who becamethe 21stCommandant.
Jim’sactiveserviceto the MarineCorps
continueduntilhis resignationas acaptain
in 1955,but he remainedin the Reserves
through1959.He was the recipientof the
KoreanServiceMedal,UN ServiceMedal,
NationalDefenseServiceMedalandRe-
publicof Korea PresidentialUnitCitation.
Devotionand honorin servinghis country
and the Corpswerehallmarksof his core
beliefs.
CaptainStephenstraveledextensivelywith
General Pate,enjoyinghis travelsthrough
Europeand Asia.Travelwas to remainalife-
longpassion,especiallyto visit newplaces
withhis childrenand grandchildren.
On his final postingin Washington,D.C.,the
“dashing”CaptainStephensmetthe love
of his life,the “glamorous”Doris(Dotty)
Wallaceand theywedJuly 9, 1955.After
abrief foray into the automotivemanufac-
turingindustry,Jim and Dottysettlednear
theirextendedStephensand Ferlazzofami-
lies in Triangle,Virginia.Jim and his brother,
Luke,openedDumfriesPharmacyin the lat-
er 1950’s. Lukewas the pharmacistand Jim

ranthe businessend.
In the early60’s, Jim brieflyattendedGeorge
WashingtonUniversitywiththe intention
of becomingapharmacisthimself,but
ultimatelyopenedafurniturestore,Ste-
phens’TowneandCountryFurniture.Ini-
tiallyco-owningbothbusinesses,Jim and
Lukeeventuallyswappedstock.The furni-
turestorefirst openedin Woodbridge,and
thenmovedto Garrisonville,Virginia.Both
Jamesand his brother,Luke,were active
participantsin communitylife and were
committedto helpingothersthroughtheir
businessesby extendingcredit,loans,bar-
ters or long lay-awayplans.Theirupbringing
instilledin them compassion for others,the
dignityof all peopleand the responsibility
to helpone’sneighborsand community.If
youwere ayoung married Marine,that was
goodenoughfor Jim -you couldhavea
housefull of furniture.
Therewereno strangersto Jim Stephens.
He wouldknowyourlife storyin 10 minutes
and rememberit forever.His familywas
constantlyamazedthatanywherein the
county,Jim couldsee an old customerand
theirfamilyand greetthemall by theirfirst
names.The consummateSoutherngentle-
man,he had asoft voice,good humorand
an alwayslisteningear.Friendsand fami-
ly wereoftenthe beneficiariesof his wise
counseland oft usedphrase,“That’sthe key
to it”. Jimand Dottywereafun, joyouscou-
ple wholovedto entertain,and theirhome
wasfilledwithfamily,friends,dancingand
laughter.His interestsincludedhistoryand
poetry.Heenjoyedadiversemusicalpalate
witheverythingfromoperatoDixieland,
banjoto swing.Gardeningandmaintain-
ing his yardwereapastimethat kepthim
outsideandvisitingwithneighborsin all
seasons.Formanyyears,hecultivateda
vegetablegardenso that his grandchildren
wouldknowwherefoodreallycamefrom.
Jim personifiedmanyof his generation.In
the wordsof TomBrokaw,“Theystayedtrue
to theirvaluesof personalresponsibility,
duty,honor,and faith.”
Jameswas precededin deathby his devot-
ed wife,Doris WallaceStephens;his parents,
MinnieGreenandBarneyBertStephens;
sisters,Ruby StephensFerlazzoand Maude
Stephens;brothers,RalphStephens,Frank
Stephens,Bert Stephensand LukeStephens.
He is survivedby his daughters,Deborah
StephensPage (Arthur)of Washington,DC,
andMelissaStephensAddison(Nicholas)
of Franschhoek,SouthAfrica;his five loving
grandchildren,ArthurHallettPage,V,Santa
Monica,CA;KatherineWallaceStephens
