InancientGreekmyth,AesculapiuswasthesonoftheGreekdivinitiesApolloandCoronis.Thecen-
taurbroughthimupandtaughthimtheartofhealing.HisdaughterHygeiapersonifiedhealth,and
hisdaughterPanacea,healing.TwoofhissonsappearinHomer’s‘Iliad’asphysiciansintheGreek
army.Theirsupposeddescendants,calledAsclepiadae,formedalargeorderofpriest-physicians.
The sacred secrets of medicine belonged only to them and were passed on from father to son.
