MiddleAges.AlchemyinvolvedasearchforthePhilosopher’sStone,whichisa
mysticprocessfortransmutingmatterfromstatetostateandworldlyconsciousness
todivineconsciousness.ItwasbasedontheAncientEgyptianconceptoftheunder-
lyingunityofallmatterandtheunityofmanwiththeuniverse.Similarteachings
andalchemicalpractitionersexistedinChinaandIndiaduringthemiddleagesas
well.AlchemywaspracticedinWesternEurope,fromtheearlyChristiantimesun-
til the 17th century. It then gave way to the modern “science” of chemistry.
