prefertoignoretheissueofspiritualityaltogetherandsimplyshunanythoughtsaboutdeathorthe
afterlife.Thisisareverse-spiritualmovementthatstuntsspiritualevolution.Itsrootcauseisfearof
theunknownandfearoflettinggo.Thepracticeofyogicmeditationtechniquescanservetocounter-
actanyandallnegativedevelopmentsinthemindifthecorrecttechniquesareusedandthecorrect
understanding is adopted.
Therearefourmaincomponentsofmeditation.Theseare:posture,breath-lifeforcecontrol,sound
andvisualization.Inthebeginningstagesofpractice,thesecomponentsmaybesomewhatdifficultto
performwithconsistencyandcoordination,butwithcontinuedeffort,theybecomeapleasurableex-
periencewhichwillbringyouclosertoyourawarenessofyourSelf.Itisdifficulttocontrolthemind
inthebeginning.Manyaspirantsloseheartbecausetheyhavenotobtainedtheresultstheyhadanti-
cipated.Theyeitherquitprematurelyorjumptodifferenttechniqueswithoutgivingsufficienttime
fortheexercisestowork.Theydonotunderstandthatalthoughonoccasion,profoundchangeswill
occur in a short time, for the most part it’s a gradual process.
Ameditativelifestyleshouldbedevelopedalongwithone’sformalmeditationpractices.Thismeans
actinginsuchawaythatthereisgreaterandgreaterdetachmentfromobjectsandsituationsand
greaterindependenceandpeacewithin.Thiscanonlyoccurwhenthereisakeenunderstandingof
one’sdeeperSelfandthenatureoftheworldofhumanexperience,alongwithformalmeditation
practicesandotheractivitieswhichpromotephysicalhealth(dietandexercise).Ordinarily,people
“do”thingsinordertogainsomeobjectiveortoderivesomepleasureorreward.Fromamystical
perspective,theyare“doersofaction.”Theyactoutoftheunconsciousandsubconsciousdesires
arisinginthemindatanygiventimeandarethus,besetwithaperpetualstateofunrestandagitation.
Themeditativewayoflifemeansthatyouractionsarealwaysaffirmationsofyourhigherknowledge
andawareness,andnotbasedontheunconsciousdesiresandemotionsofthemind.Perfectioninthis
disciplineonlycomeswithpractice.Whenthisartisperfected,thepractitionerisreferredtoasa
“non-doer.”Thisisbecauseeventhoughtheymaybedoingmanythingsintheirlife,inrealitythey
havediscoveredthatthetruerewardsoflifedonotdependontheoutcomeofanactivity,itsfruitor
reward.
Thus,truepeaceandinnerfulfillmentwillnevercomethroughpursuitofactionswhenthereisanex-
pectationordesireforthefruitsofthoseactions.Thebeliefinobjectsorworldlyactivitiesasasource
ofhappinessisthereforeseenasastateofignorancewhereintheindividualiscaughtupintheillu-
sions,fantasiesandfancifulnotionsofthemind.However,happinessandpeacecanarisespontan-
eouslywhenthereisanattitudeofdetachmentanddispassiontowardobjectsandsituationsinlife.If
actionsareperformedwiththeideaofdiscoveringpeacewithinbasedontheunderstandingofthe
philosophyoutlinedabove,andforthesakeofthebettermentofsociety,thentheseactionswillhave
theeffectofpurifyingtheheartoftheindividual.Thedesiresandexpectationswilldwindlewhilethe
innerfulfillmentandawarenessofthepresentmomentwillincrease.Therewillbegreaterandgreater
discoveryofpeacewithin,adiscoveryofwhatistrulystableandchangelesswithinasopposedtothe
