Psyllium Seed

Plantago afra
DESCRIPTION
Medicinal Parts: The medicinal parts are the ripe seeds.
Flower and Fruit: The inflorescence is a 12-mm long spike
with glandular hairs and ovate-lanceolate bracts with a
midrib and translucent lateral lamina. The corolla is disc-
shaped with 4 translucent petals. The edge of the calyx has 4
acute lobes. The sepals are 3 to 4.5 cm and lanceolate. The
ovary is superior, and the fruit is a 2-sectioned, membranous
pyxidium. The seeds are dark brown, glossy and narrowly
oblong in outline.

Leaves, Stem and Root: The plant is an artnual that is erect
widi stems up to 60 cm high. The stems have ascending,
pubescent branches with patent or ascending hairs and are
more or less minutely glandular above. The leaves are 3 to 8
by 0.1 to 0.3 cm, linear or linear-lanceolate and are not
fleshy. The bracts are 3.5 to 8 mm and all have a similar
shape. They are ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, sharp-edged
or acuminate with a broad dry membranous margin without
lateral ribs.

Habitat: The plant is indigenous to the Mediterranean region
and western Asia. Psyllium Seeds are cultivated in Spain,
central Europe, Israel, Russia, India, Pakistan, Japan, Cuba
and southern Brazil.
Production: Psyllium Seed (blonde) consists of the dried,
ripe seed of Plantago psyllium (syn. Plantago afra) and of
Plantago indica (syn. Plantago arenaria), with a swell index
of at least 10, and its formulations.
Not to be Confused With: The seeds of other Plantago seeds.
