Typotown – HeiWid
Typotown is a playful, interactive, three-dimensional
environment made exclusively from type. Users can view
the towering letters from diverse angles. Moving the cursor
allows users to move forwards, backwards, and left and
right. The user interface allows changes to the typeface,
type colour and the transparency of letters. Users can also
defi ne the four-letter word that shapes the virtual buildings.
The application does not lend itself to communicating text
messages, but through changing the display settings, the
user can produce an infi nite amount of graphics. HeiWid
(short for Heinz Widmer) created this online application
with Lingo script in Macromedia Director, a multimedia
application that has been largely superseded by Adobe
Flash. HeiWid works in Bern, Switzerland, where he co-runs
a design consultancy called Büro Destruct together with his
