Exhibit 4-75. SP unable to stop gripping handrails
SP’s are required to walk on the treadmill without holding on to the handrail.
Grasping the handrail throughout the test will tend to overestimate the SP’s VO 2 max.
Some SP’s may hold the handrail for support at the beginning of the exam for support.
If this occurs, repeat the instructions for walking on a treadmill and try to coach him
or her to walk on the treadmill without holding. Remind the SP to stand up straight,
look ahead not down at their feet and take long steps as the belt moves.
Lightly touching the handrails for balance purposes is allowed but only if absolutely
necessary.
Give them lots of encouragement and try to keep the SP walking on the belt. If they
continue to have problems and are holding on or briefly grabbing the handrails after
you have repeated these instructions, use the method for stopping the test early and go
to Recovery.
Do not allow the SP to complete the exam if he or she is holding on to the handrails
for a large part of the test as this will result in an overestimation of the VO 2 max.
After the Recovery stage is completed, the ISIS system will advance to the Priority 2
Stopping Criteria.
