- Are you currently pregnant? How many weeks?
SPs are excluded from CV Fitness if they have an amputation of one or both legs based on
physical limitation. A weight of greater than 350 pounds will exclude the SP due to a weight limitation of
the treadmill. SPs are excluded for safety reasons if they have a pacemaker or automatic defibrillator or if
females are greater than 12 weeks pregnant. See Chapter 4 for specific details on completing the data
entry for these exclusions.
3.1.2 Medical History
SPs are asked specific questions in the Household Interview about their medical history and
physical limitations. These Physical Activity Readiness questions are used by researchers and clinicians
to determine whether individuals can safely perform a fitness test on a treadmill. The questions asked in
the Household Interview are listed below:
- Has a doctor ever said you have a heart condition and that you should only do
physical activity recommended by a doctor? - Do you feel pain in your chest when you do physical activity?
- In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not doing any physical
activity? - Do you lose your balance because of dizziness?
- Do you ever lose consciousness?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem that could be made worse by walking?
- Do you know of any other reason why you should not walk on a treadmill?
If the SP responds ‘Yes,’ ‘Don’t Know,’ or ‘Refused’ to one or more of these questions, the
physician in the MEC will review the specific question(s) with the SP during the Physician’s Exam to
determine if the SP should be excluded from the treadmill test based on this/these question(s). If the
physician determines that there is no indication for exclusion to the treadmill test based on this/these
question(s), the flag for exclusion will be removed. If all other reasons for exclusion are negative, the SP
will be cleared for the treadmill test.
