lossy Describes a form of data compression where
informationthatisdeemedunnecessaryiseffectivelylost
or discarded.


low-key A more considered lighting technique where
only a few lights are used in a very controlled and
directional way, and often shot onto a darker background.


low resolution Camera fileswhich aresmaller than 1
MB.


macro lens Used for fine close-up detailed images,
whereoftenthesubjectwillbegreaterthanlifesizeinthe
final image.


matrix metering A light metering system found in
digitalSLRs.Informationisgatheredfromthered,green,
andblue(RGB)sensorinthecameraandtakesindistance
informationprovidedby thelens,and evaluatestheseto
obtainacorrectexposurecalculation.Thisinformationis
thencompared with the overall brightness, contrast,and
otherlightingcharacteristics,andmakesacomparisonwith
a database of many thousands ofimages, resulting in a
correct exposure.


metadata Information stored by the camera with the
image, recordingall otherpiecesof informationsuch as
copyright,credit,theExifdata,anytagsorotherdetailsthe
photographer may wish to add.


model release A document allowing the photographer
rights to reproduce the image as he wishes.
