D-Photo USA (2019-07-08)

February–March 2006 —
D-Photo Issue No. 10
We see the arrival of the
original Canon 5D, which
has a significant impact on
the industry. It wasn’t the
first full-frame DSLR, but it
was the first to be offered in
such a compact form and
for around half the price of
others boasting a similar sensor.
This issue also features a chat with sports
photographer superstar Andrew Cornaga, as well
as a reviewer flipping out over the new iPod Video.

June–July 2011 —
D-Photo Issue No. 42

The Auckland Festival of Photography awards its first ever
Annual Commission to photographer Roberta Thornley, who
we chat to in this issue.

We also see the Amateur Photographer of the Year Awards
(now the official name) expand to six categories — People,
Monochrome, Landscape, Travel, Heart of New Zealand,
Creative — and find a new sponsor in Nikon. The top award is
taken out by Evan McBride, who topped both the People and
Monochrome categories.

This issue also sees the Fujifilm X100 (RRP $2199) released,
marking the start of a retro-focused design trend that
continues today.

August–September 2007 —
D-Photo Issue No. 19
This issue marks Sony’s first foray
into the DSLR game, with the
Sony a100. It offers a 10.2MP
APS-C-size CCD sensor along
with Super Steady Shot image
stabilization and Eye-Start
autofocus (AF) technology,
acquired through the company’s
purchase of Konica Minolta’s
camera division.
This is also the issue that the first iPhone makes its
influence felt: not the first or best camera phone, but
easily the most popular.

April–May 2008 —
D-Photo Issue No. 23

Another iconic camera makes its D-Photo debut with the
launch of Nikon’s D300. A top-of-class 12.3MP APS-C
sensor, sturdy magnesium alloy body, 51-point AF system,
and superior low-light performance make it a firm pick for
almost any type of photographer.

We also catch up with Frank Habicht,
iconic photographer of New Zealand’s swinging ’60s.

August–September 2005 —
D-Photo Issue No. 7
One year on, and new DSLRs
are the talk of the town. This
issue sees Nikon drop a pair of
6.1MP models: the D70s and
D50. The Nikon D70s wins
out over its similar brother
and the Canon 350D, which
received a glowing review in the
previous issue.

The first issue of D-Photo
pits a crop of compacts
against one another,
with the 3MP, 3x optical
zoom Pentax Optio 30
coming out on top.
Looking ahead, there is
a Fujifilm Finepix F610
on the way, boasting an
amazing 6.3MP for
just $1199.

June–July 2012 —
D-Photo Issue No. 48
This issue we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the
Photographic Society of New Zealand’s (PSNZ)
National Convention, held in Invercargill. We also
launch our extremely popular
Mobile Photographer of the
Year competition, in case you
thought we weren’t keeping
up with the times.
One of our most high-
profile interviews can also
be found in this issue:
a talk with the great
Steve McCurry.
