OpenOffice creates backup files of all of your work, whether it be a word
processing document or a spreadsheet and they’re all in the same location.

Open your backed

up document

1

Double-click file
Double-click the file you want to open
and select ‘Choose Application’. Or right-click
the file, select ‘Open With’ and choose ‘Other’
since OpenOffice is unlikely to appear here.

2

Find OpenOffice
Find OpenOffice and select ‘Open’. Once
your document launches into the app, it is a
good idea to go to File>Save As and not only
rename the file but place it into different folder.

Step-by-step Find your backup documents

1

Launch OpenOffice
If your Mac crashes while you’re working
with OpenOffice, you may fear the worst. But
launch OpenOffice again and you’ll likely see a
prompt to recover your unsaved work.

4

Open Finder
You are now going to locate the backup
folder on your Mac. Launch Finder and click
‘Go’ in the menu bar before selecting ‘Go to
Folder’. Alternatively press shift-command-G.

2

Manually recover files
Sometimes highlighting a file and clicking
‘Start Recovery’ doesn’t work or you just want
to see a past version of your document. In
such cases, go to OpenOffice>Preferences.

5

Enter the path
In the box that appears, enter the path
you made a note of just a short while ago,
being careful not to make any mistakes and
then click ‘Go’. The Backup folder will open.

3

Find the path
Select OpenOffice from the left-hand
menu and click ‘Paths’. In the right-hand
window, look for the option Backups. Make a
note of the accompanying path.

6

Find your file
Simply scroll down the list of backed up
files to find the one that you are after. They
all end with a .bak suffix which signifies their
status. Double-click to open it.
