The best of the many typing aids

Swipe to type
Instead of tapping keys to type words,
it is possible to swipe over them
without lifting your finger and the
words magically appear. This feature
is coming to iOS 13, but if you can’t
wait, there are alternative keyboards
in the App Store that enable it, like
SwiftKey Keyboard. Switch to it with
the keyboard button and swipe to type.

Foreign characters
Foreign languages have different
characters which can be accessed by pressing
and holding on a key. Slide your finger to the
one you want. It also works with symbols.

8

Add a keyboard
In the App Store search for ‘keyboard’ to
see alternatives like Grammarly. Install it, then
go to General>Keyboard>Keyboards. Tap it
under Third Party Keyboards.

9

Activate a keyboard
After adding a keyboard app, it must
be allowed access to the system. Tap it and
enable it. Press the keyboard button when
typing to switch to the new one.

Use Text
Replacement
Tap here to see and add
text replacements. For
example, type ‘omw’ and
it is automatically replaced
with ‘On my way!’ Add your
own shortcuts for common
phrases to make typing faster
and easier.

Activate keyboards
The iPhone comes with many
foreign language keyboards and
ones downloaded from the App
Store appear here too. Go to
‘Keyboards’ to select a keyboard
or to finish installing and activate it.

Auto-fix typing
Does Auto-Correct get in the
way and change what you type
into something else when words
are not recognised, like technical
terms? Turn off Auto-Correct and
Auto-Capitalisation if you prefer.

Use predictive text
Enable it to show words you
probably want to type next
and tap them to save typing.
Disable Predictive if the
suggestions are not useful
and the keyboard shrinks to
show more of the screen.
