mom tries not to give in to him, but it’s really hard. Sometimes he gets so mad that he just

Burned Out

Dear Burned Out,

If someone refuses to talk to you, it’s very difficult to have a healthy relationship. It sounds
like you, your mother, and your brother would benefit from some family counseling. I suggest
talking with your school counselor first. Explain the situation and how you feel about it. The
counselor may have ideas you hadn’t thought of or can suggest the next step.
If you’re concerned about the cost of family counseling, contact your county mental
health department, which may offer counseling for free or at a minimal cost. Also, some
family therapists in private practice offer sliding-scale fees (which means that clients pay only
what they can afford). The important thing is that you reach out for help. Good luck!
