surface using the dropper. Th e con-
centrated watercolor formed strong
values that constrasted with the
extra-white Fabriano Artistico water-
color paper.
Next, I used a damp fl at brush and
touched the face and hair to soften
the edges and create a background.
I then brushed in Winsor & Newton
dark paints to strengthen the back-
ground and clothing. I purposely left
some hard edges around the facial
features to add emphasis to the center
of interest. Finally, I painted light
shadows on the face using a small
round brush.
