sunbathers, bikes, prams and
dogs, while children paddle in
the Thames. Perhaps like
schoolchildren at Chiswick
forty years later they were
attracted to the river because
there was no longer an indoor
swimming pool at Putney; the
baths which had opened in
1886 had closed, and there
would be no indoor provision
for swimmers until 1968.
