land. The tradition elsewhere
in Europe went back even
further, with floating baths,
bains flottants or Flussbader,
in Paris, Frankfurt and
Vienna in the 1760s. These
were more like barges for
those interested in the
‘beneficial medicinal effects’
of cold-water bathing.
